He returned with two concrete projects — and confirmation that the need for housing remains immense. Reception at the Grand Serail At the Grand Serail, the seat of government in Beirut, Mohamad Ajami met the Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Before taking office in 2025, Salam served as a judge and, most recently, President of the International Court of Justice in The Hague — the highest court of the United Nations. The conversation focused on Barakah Charity’s work in Lebanon — supporting refugees, displaced people and the Lebanese population as a whole. The Prime Minister thanked the team for the help provided. They discussed the latest aid convoy, the houses that Barakah Charity builds for homeless families, and several new projects in the country. “We work worldwide — and we will not forget the people of Lebanon. In the following days, the Barakah Charity team visited three Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. There, it becomes clear what is missing in everyday life — above all in medical care. Afterwards, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Lebanon, Dr Mohammad al-Asaad, received the team. He thanked them for their work in the camps and likewise for the help Barakah Charity provides in Gaza and the West Bank. An operating room for children Barakah Charity supports an operating room at a hospital in Lebanon. In future, it will treat children who otherwise have no access to good medical care — children from Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon itself. For many families, this is the difference between an operation that happens and one that is postponed again and again. Planned: a dialysis unit in Lebanon One topic came up again and again in the talks: dialysis. In this treatment, the blood is cleaned by a machine when the kidneys can no longer do so — without it, those affected cannot survive, and they need it several times a week. That is exactly where the hardship lies: anyone in Lebanon who depends on it currently has to travel for hours. Not once, but again and again. For sick people, this is barely manageable — physically, and financially even less so. That is why Barakah Charity has committed to working towards installing a dialysis machine at a hospital in Lebanon. This would bring treatment within reach for the people of the region. In Lebanon, we are already active with mobile clinics that treat chronically ill people in the refugee camps and provide medication free of charge. The invitation was made in recognition of the significant humanitarian work that SBC has been carrying out in the region for years. We are particularly known there for our commitment to humanitarian aid and social support. Cadmous College, a Christian educational institution with an interfaith character, traditionally honors outstanding individuals or institutions that have rendered exceptional service to the community. The school is characterized by respectful and inclusive interaction among students and staff of various religious backgrounds. The ceremony took place in a dignified setting. Among the attendees were representatives of various social groups, including the military commander in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL forces, Christian priests, Muslim imams, and local political figures. The symbolic presence of these diverse guests reflected the intercultural and interfaith spirit of the event. A deeply moving moment for us was the touching start of the ceremony, when church bells and the muezzin’s call to prayer rang out simultaneously. This powerful symbol of peaceful and respectful coexistence remains vividly in our memory. In his speech, Mohamad Ajami, CEO of Swiss Barakah Charity, emphasized the great importance of social responsibility. The aim was to support families in need with food supplies and bring joy to children by giving them new school backpacks. Living Conditions and Challenges Poverty has worsened in Malaysia in recent years, particularly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising living costs. Refugees are especially affected. Over 100,000 Rohingya refugees currently live in Malaysia, making up around 60% of all UNHCR-registered refugees and asylum seekers in the country. Most reside in Kuala Lumpur under precarious conditions without formal refugee status, education, healthcare, legal employment, or basic services. In addition to the Rohingya, Malaysia also hosts refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, and Sri Lanka. These groups make up about 12% of the registered refugees. They too often lack legal status and rely on humanitarian aid. Food for Families in Need Due to the economic challenges many Malaysian families face, we put together aid packages with essential food items – rice, oil, flour, canned goods, and hygiene products – for both local people and refugees. Over 1,000 families in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur were reached through this campaign. Our team handed out the packages personally, with a focus on respectful and dignified treatment. We received warm welcomes; many locals took pictures with us. Numerous families expressed deep gratitude – this support makes a real difference in their daily lives. In collaboration with local communities, we distributed hundreds of high-quality backpacks filled with school supplies and hygiene products. Mountain roads centimetres away from the abyss, ankle-high water and stony stretches. We drive to Imindounit, which translates as the end of life, the end of the world. This is where the Amazigh village, which was badly damaged by the earthquake, is located – literally at the end of the world.Shortly before the last narrowing of the road between two mountains in the huge and majestic Atlas Mountains, we have to leave the smaller support vehicle of our two-man tandem behind. Some of our team have to walk 1.5 km from here. No one drives past by chance, the place is not on any route where you would accidentally end up and, to be honest, we wonder how it is even known that there are people here – people live so far away from the action.There, at the “end of the world”, Swiss Barakah Charity has opened a center – a place for education and social life. From now on, the Amazigh community’s center will provide children with tutoring and adults will be able to shape the social life of the village.
